GROUP DECRIES PERSISTENT KILLINGS, DESERTED HOMES IN KWARA COMMUNITIES

A civic group, the Kwara South Development Forum, has raised an alarm over worsening insecurity in Kwara State, accusing authorities of failing to protect residents from ongoing attacks.

In a statement signed by its acting Speaker, Obashola Ayomide Ridwan, the group said communities in Kwara South are under siege, with increasing cases of killings, kidnappings, and displacement.

The forum recalled previous incidents involving traditional rulers, including the killing of the monarch of Koro town, Segun Aremu-Cole, in 2024, and the abduction of Oba Bayagan in Ifelodun Local Government Area.

It also cited a more recent case on January 1, 2026, when the Oniwo of Afin, Simeon Olanipekun, and his son were abducted by suspected terrorists in the Ile-Ire district.

According to the group, attacks have extended to places of worship, with worshippers reportedly kidnapped during church services in communities such as Eruku and Omugo.

The forum said the situation has forced many families to sell property to pay ransom, while over 20 communities have been abandoned as residents flee for safety.

It further highlighted the challenges faced by local vigilantes, noting that several have been killed while trying to defend their communities without adequate weapons or support.

The group also alleged that security agencies failed to act on advance warnings of impending attacks in parts of the region.

Calling for urgent intervention, the forum urged both the state and federal governments to deploy more security personnel and equip local vigilante groups with necessary resources to combat the violence.

It warned that without immediate action, the crisis could escalate further, leading to more displacement and deepening humanitarian concerns in the area.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
