The Federal Government has trained 5,000 young Nigerians as part of a major initiative to accelerate the deployment of smart electricity meters across the country.

The programme, organised by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Power, equips participants with technical skills in meter installation, maintenance, and digital energy management. Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, described the training as a dual-purpose strategy to improve power infrastructure and create employment opportunities for youths. “This is about building capacity while modernising our electricity system,” Adelabu said.

The trained youths will be deployed to support ongoing metering projects in various states, helping to reduce estimated billing and enhance revenue collection for distribution companies.

The initiative aligns with the government’s broader goal of achieving universal metering and improving transparency in the power sector.

Participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity, with many viewing it as a stepping stone to careers in the energy industry.
