President Bola Tinubu arrived in Ogun State on Sunday to attend the eighth-day Fidau prayer in honour of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

He was received at the Gateway International Airport in Iperu by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, along with other South-West governors.

The visit was confirmed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) by the President’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun.

“President Bola Tinubu has arrived at the Gateway International Airport, Iperu, Ogun State, ahead of his visit to Ijebu-Ode to attend the eighth-day prayer ceremony for the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona. He is accompanied by First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, and received by a delegation led by Governor Dapo Abiodun and other South-West governors,” Olusegun wrote.

The prayer ceremony is taking place at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, one of the city’s major public venues.

Oba Adetona, a revered Yoruba monarch, passed away on July 13 at the age of 91 and was buried the following day according to Islamic rites. With a reign spanning 65 years, he was one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers and a significant figure in regional and national affairs.

Security presence has been visibly heightened across Ijebu-Ode, particularly around the Dipo Dina Stadium, the Awujale’s Palace, and his Igbeba private residence, ahead of the event.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
