The Gombe Women Agenda has engaged religious leaders, traditional rulers and other stakeholders as part of efforts to increase women’s participation in governance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group presented a proposed charter of demands during a stakeholders’ meeting in Gombe.

The convener, Ibrahim Yusuf, said the organisation brings together more than 100 women’s groups and was created to coordinate their concerns and engage political aspirants.

The proposed charter contains 10 major pillars and about 20 recommendations, with education, maternal healthcare and women’s economic empowerment listed among the key areas.

Yusuf said the group deliberately involved men, religious leaders and traditional institutions because wider community support was necessary to achieve its objectives.

He said traditional and religious leaders could help communicate the concerns of women to political leaders and other decision-makers.

The group also highlighted the importance of improving girls’ education and recognising women’s contribution to the local economy.

The stakeholders were asked to review and support the charter as the group prepares to engage political actors ahead of the 2027 elections.

The initiative comes amid increasing political discussions around women’s representation and participation in governance across the country.
