GHANA BEAT SOUTH AFRICA ON PENALTIES TO WIN WAFCON BRONZE
Ghana’s Black Queens have clinched third place at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco after a dramatic penalty shootout win over South Africa.
The match, which was a rematch of their group stage clash (where South Africa won 2-0), ended 1-1 in regular time, forcing both sides into a penalty shootout.
South Africa took the lead in the first half after Nonhlanhla Mthandi capitalized on a defensive mix-up and slotted the ball into an empty net. But Ghana drew level in the second half thanks to an own goal from South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini.
With no extra time played in the third-place match, it all came down to penalties — and Ghana held their nerve. South Africa’s S. Holweni and H. Magaia missed their spot-kicks, handing the victory to the Black Queens.
The win gives Ghana a strong finish to their tournament and a bit of revenge over Bayana Bayana after their earlier loss in the group stage.
