Germany has launched a new online visa application portal that allows applicants to start and manage visa requests digitally through its Consular Services platform.

The initiative is aimed at making the visa process easier, faster, and more secure for users worldwide, including applicants in Nigeria.

With the new system, users can submit applications, upload supporting documents, and monitor the progress of their requests online, reducing the need for multiple physical visits to embassies or visa centres.

Officials said the portal supports several visa categories and provides clearer guidance on requirements and procedures.

A video shared by the German Embassy in Nigeria on Friday explained how the platform works and outlined eligible visa types.

According to the video, “The Consular Service Portal is an online application system for selected visas where you upload your documents on the portal. We pre-check to ensure it is complete, then invite you for an in-person appointment either at the Consulate in Lagos or at VFS for student visas.”

The embassy added that the portal can be used for student visas, researcher visas, work-related visas, and language course visas.

The development is part of Germany’s broader effort to digitise consular services and improve the overall experience for visa applicants.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
