GBENGA DANIEL ACCUSES OGUN GOVT OF POLITICAL WITCH-HUNT OVER PLANNED DEMOLITION OF HOMES, HOTELS
A political storm is brewing in Ogun State as former governor and current Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of plotting to demolish several of his properties, including his Sagamu private residence, The Asoludero Court, Conference Hotels Limited, and its annex.
According to Daniel, officials acting on the governor’s orders served him notices of contravention, quit, and demolition, giving him just three days to vacate on Friday, August 8, 2025. The government claims these properties violate provisions of the state’s 2022 Urban and Regional Planning Law.
Daniel, however, insists the allegations are baseless, describing them as “laughable” and rooted in “political vindictiveness at its highest level.” He points out that the buildings in question were constructed years before the 2022 law existed. The Asoludero Court in 2004, the Conference Hotel Sagamu in 2013, and the annexe in 2015.
“The governor’s administration is using a flimsy excuse to justify a political witch-hunt,” Daniel said in a statement. “This is not due process, it’s an intimidation tactic.”
He also linked the current threat to a previous incident in 2023, when his wife’s property, DATKEM Plaza in Ijebu Ode, was demolished under controversial circumstances. That matter is still in court, with the state government having lost several legal applications so far.
The senator called on human rights groups, legal bodies, and concerned Nigerians to condemn what he described as “egregious abuse of power.”
The Ogun State government, however, denies any political motive. Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Kayode Akinmade, explained that the demolition threat is part of a state-wide review of property documentation and building approvals.
“Nobody is targeting Senator Daniel,” Akinmade said. “If your papers are in order, there’s nothing to fear.”
With tensions rising, all eyes will be on how this clash between the two political heavyweights plays out, whether in courtrooms, political arenas, or the court of public opinion.
