FUSENGBUWA HOUSE DEMANDS RIGHT TO CHOOSE NEXT AWUJALE

The Fusengbuwa Ruling House of Ijebu-Ode has reaffirmed its determination to produce the next Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, insisting that it is entitled to its turn in the succession process.

The declaration followed an enlarged meeting of princes and princesses of the ruling house in Ijebu-Ode, where members were briefed on the stalled selection process and the legal steps being taken by the family.

The chairman of the ruling house, Abdulateef Owoyemi, said the large turnout at the meeting showed that members remained united and supported the leadership’s efforts to resolve the matter.

The ruling house has instituted a case against Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, the Awujale kingmakers and other officials, asking the court to compel the completion of the selection process.

The family maintains that it completed its internal nomination process in line with the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law and should be allowed to proceed with the next stage of selecting the monarch.

The legal dispute comes after the state government halted the succession process in January 2026, citing petitions and concerns raised by security agencies and other stakeholders.

The Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who spent 65 years on the throne.

A total of 95 aspirants had emerged from the ruling house’s nomination exercise before the process was suspended.
