FUNDING, GOVERNORS’ INFLUENCE MAJOR CONCERNS OVER STATE POLICE – STAKEHOLDERS
Stakeholders have identified inadequate funding and the potential abuse of power by state governors as two of the biggest challenges facing the proposed creation of state police in Nigeria.
The concerns were raised during discussions on ongoing efforts to reform the country’s security architecture and improve policing at the sub-national level.
According to participants, while state police could enhance local security and improve response to crime, questions remain about how such agencies would be funded and sustained over time.
They also warned that without strong safeguards and oversight mechanisms, state police formations could be vulnerable to political interference and misuse by state governments.
Some stakeholders argued that clear constitutional provisions, independent oversight bodies, and professional standards would be necessary to prevent abuse and protect citizens’ rights.
Others maintained that decentralised policing could help address security challenges more effectively by allowing officers to better understand local communities and threats.
The debate over state police has gained momentum amid growing calls for reforms to strengthen security across the country.
Stakeholders urged lawmakers and policymakers to carefully consider both the benefits and risks of the proposal before reaching a final decision on its implementation.
