FUNDING DELAY PUTS TARABA’S NATIONAL YOUTH GAMES HOPES AT RISK

Taraba State’s participation in the zonal elimination of the National Youth Games, set to begin tomorrow in Gombe State, is under threat due to a delay in the release of funds.

Athletes and officials, who have been camping at the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo, say they are stranded and frustrated by what they see as the state government’s slow response to sports development needs.

While other states have already arrived in Gombe, Taraba’s contingent remains stuck in the state capital — a situation athletes fear could ruin their chances. They recall that a similar late departure to the last National Sports Festival in Ogun State hurt their performance and medal tally.

“We are ready and confident we can win medals if given the opportunity,” one athlete said, appealing to Governor Agbu Kefas to step in and ensure funds are released on time.

Sports council officials confirmed they submitted a formal funding request to the government via the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Government House, but say progress has stalled. One insider suggested the governor — known for his support for youth and sports — may not be aware of the urgency, blaming bureaucratic delays for the holdup.

With the competition starting tomorrow, the clock is ticking for Taraba’s young athletes.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
