President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved presidential pardons and clemency for 175 Nigerians, including notable figures such as late environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, nationalist Herbert Macaulay, Major General Mamman Vatsa, and Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death for killing her husband.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the decision was based on recommendations from the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).
The list is divided into six categories:
Pardoned Individuals
Posthumous Pardons (including the Ogoni Nine)
Victims of the Ogoni Nine Honoured
Presidential Clemency Beneficiaries
Inmates with Reduced Terms of Imprisonment
Inmates on Death Row Reduced to Life Imprisonment

Pardoned Individuals include:
Nweke Francis Chibueze β serving life sentence for cocaine trafficking
Dr Nwogu Peters β jailed 17 years for fraud (since 2013)
Hon. Farouk Lawan β sentenced to five years in 2021 for corruption
Ayinla Saadu Alanamu β jailed seven years for bribery
Posthumous Pardons:
Sir Herbert Macaulay β nationalist sentenced in 1913 under British rule
Major-General Mamman Jiya Vatsa β executed in 1986 for alleged coup plot
The Ogoni Nine (Posthumous):
Ken Saro-Wiwa, Barinem Kiobel, Baribor Bera, and others were posthumously cleared
Victims of the Ogoni Nine Honoured:
Chief Albert Badey, Chief Edward Kobaru, Chief Samuel Orage, and Chief Theophilus Orage

The list includes inmates convicted for drug-related offences, unlawful mining, fraud, and other non-violent crimes.
Among them are:
Maryam Sanda, sentenced to death in 2020 for culpable homicide
Ex-Corporal Michael Bawa, jailed for murder since 2005
Lina Kusum Wilson, sentenced to death in 2017 for homicide
Dozens of miners convicted in 2024 for illegal mining received three-year sentences

Inmates who showed good conduct, old age, or ill health received reduced terms.
Notable names include:
Professor Magaji Garba β sentenced to seven years for obtaining money under false pretence; term cut to four years
Chief Emeka Agbodike β sentence reduced from seven to three years
Kelvin Oniarah Ezigbe and Frank Azuekor β convicted for kidnapping, sentence reduced to 13 years

Six inmates on death row had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment, including:
Emmanuel Baba β convicted for culpable homicide
Benjamin Ekeze β convicted for armed robbery
Moses Ayodele Olorunfemi β on death row since 2012
The pardons are aimed at promoting justice reform, decongesting correctional centres, and encouraging rehabilitation and reintegration of deserving inmates.
