FUEL TAX WON’T BEGIN IN JANUARY 2026 – TAX REFORM CHAIRMAN CLARIFIES
Chairman of the Presidential Tax Reform Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has dismissed claims that the new fuel tax will kick off in January 2026, saying the implementation date will be announced later by the Minister of Finance.
Recently, reports had circulated that the proposed levy of ₦500 on every ₦10,000 worth of fuel purchase would begin next January. The news sparked outrage among Nigerians, with many condemning the move and calling for its suspension.
In a video statement released Friday morning, Oyedele explained that although the levy is part of the new tax law, it does not automatically take effect in January.
“What we have is a law enacted some years back with a surcharge on fuel under the FERMA Act. This provision in the new tax law will only take effect on a date in the future, based on an order by the Minister of Finance. The Minister is responsible enough to determine when it is appropriate to do so,” he clarified.
Oyedele further explained that the funds generated from the fuel surcharge will be dedicated to transport infrastructure projects. The goal, he said, is to reduce the cost of moving goods and services across the country and ultimately help bring down inflation.
His clarification is expected to calm public concerns, though many Nigerians remain skeptical about the impact of the levy once implemented.
