FUEL COSTS HIT BUSINESSES ALONG ZAMFARA-NIGER BORDER
Rising and unstable fuel prices are putting pressure on businesses and trade in communities along the Nigeria-Niger border in Zamfara State.
An investigation by The PUNCH found that higher fuel costs and increased transport fares have significantly affected economic activities in border communities, with traders reporting a decline in the volume of business between communities on both sides of the border.
The affected communities, particularly those around Zurmi Local Government Area, continue to trade with neighbouring communities in Niger Republic. Residents and traders were observed moving goods and services across the border without reported restrictions on movement.
However, the rising cost of fuel has made transportation more expensive, increasing the cost of moving goods and reducing the profitability of traders and other small businesses.
The development has also affected residents who depend on cross-border trade for their livelihoods, as higher transportation expenses are making it more difficult to move goods between markets.
A businessman in Gurbin Bore, Zurmi Local Government Area, said the border had remained open since 2023, contradicting recent political claims that reopening the border would be necessary to restore trade.
The situation highlights the broader impact of rising fuel and transportation costs on businesses operating in Nigeria’s border communities.
