Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has inaugurated a newly upgraded neuropsychiatric hospital and a new general hospital in Rumuigbo, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

The projects were officially opened on Tuesday as part of the state government’s efforts to expand access to healthcare and improve medical infrastructure.

Fubara said the neuropsychiatric hospital was upgraded after he inspected an ageing mental health facility and identified the need for a comprehensive reconstruction and modernisation of the site.

He explained that the project was expanded from a rehabilitation initiative into a modern healthcare facility capable of providing improved services to residents.

The governor said the investment reflected his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and ensuring that residents have access to quality medical services closer to home.

The general hospital is also expected to improve access to primary and secondary healthcare services for residents of Obio/Akpor and surrounding communities.

The facilities are located in an area associated with former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The outgoing President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Afam Osigwe, SAN, who served as the special guest of honour, performed the ceremonial commissioning of the facilities.

Osigwe commended the state government for investing in healthcare infrastructure and particularly praised the attention given to mental health services.

He said a functional neuropsychiatric facility was important to any modern healthcare system, given the need for specialised support for people experiencing mental health challenges.

The commissioning marks another addition to Rivers State’s healthcare infrastructure as the government continues to invest in the construction, rehabilitation and upgrading of medical facilities across the state.

The state government said the projects are expected to improve healthcare access and strengthen the capacity of public hospitals to serve residents.
