FRSC LAUNCHES CRACKDOWN ON OVERLOADED TRUCKS IN KADUNA

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a renewed enforcement operation targeting overloaded articulated vehicles in Kaduna State, part of broader efforts to reduce road traffic risks and improve highway safety.

The initiative, which is taking place along key corridors including the Abuja–Kaduna Expressway, involves heightened patrols and inspections by FRSC officers aimed at enforcing load limits and other safety regulations that govern heavy trucks and trailers.

Zero‑Tolerance Enforcement and Public Safety

Under the operation, dubbed “Zero‑Tolerance”, officers are stopping, inspecting and impounding vehicles that are found to be carrying loads in excess of legal limits — a long‑standing factor in crashes involving articulated vehicles across the region.

The Kaduna Sector Command of the FRSC says the deployment of over 1,400 personnel across the state is part of a strategic campaign running through the end of the festive season and beyond to ensure compliance with all road safety regulations.

Speaking at the flag‑off of the operation, the Sector Commander stressed that combating dangerous practices such as overloading, speeding and reckless driving remains central to the Corps’ mandate and crucial to reducing road traffic crashes and fatalities.

He also urged commercial transport operators and drivers to cooperate with officers during checks and to adhere strictly to load and safety regulations for the benefit of all road users.

Background and National Enforcement

The FRSC’s intensified focus on overloaded vehicles aligns with nationwide directives for tougher enforcement against overloading, which has historically contributed to loss of control by heavy trucks and subsequent accidents.

In recent years, the Corps has impounded hundreds of overloaded vehicles across various zones of the country as part of ongoing efforts to discourage unsafe driving practices and to protect motorists on major transport corridors.

What This Means for Motorists

Transport experts and road safety advocates have welcomed the FRSC’s actions, saying reducing excessive loads on highways will improve braking ability, vehicle stability and overall safety for long‑distance haulers and regular motorists alike.

Motorists are also being reminded to avoid overloading their own vehicles and to ensure that goods and passengers are transported within the legal limits to prevent fines, impoundment or involvement in avoidable road incidents.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
