FRSC COMMENDS SPECIAL MARSHALS FOR HELPING CURB ROAD CRASHES

The Federal Road Safety Corps has praised its Special Marshals for their contributions to reducing road traffic crashes and promoting safer driving practices across Nigeria.

The commendation highlights the important role played by the volunteer officers in supporting the FRSC’s road safety operations, particularly through public enlightenment, traffic monitoring and assistance to regular personnel on the highways.

The Special Marshals programme provides an avenue for members of the public to contribute directly to road safety efforts. Their activities complement those of the regular corps by helping to educate motorists and other road users on the need to obey traffic regulations.

The FRSC has continued to emphasise that preventing road crashes requires the cooperation of government agencies, motorists, pedestrians and other road users. The corps has also identified speeding, reckless driving, distracted driving and poor compliance with traffic regulations among factors responsible for many crashes.

The recognition comes against the backdrop of a reported decline in road crash fatalities in Nigeria. The FRSC previously disclosed that the country recorded a 12 per cent reduction in road traffic crash deaths in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the corresponding period in 2025.

Despite the improvement, the agency has maintained that more work is required to bring down the number of crashes and deaths on Nigerian roads. It has therefore continued to combine enforcement with public awareness campaigns and other preventive measures.

The Special Marshals are expected to remain involved in educating motorists, supporting traffic control and encouraging compliance with road safety rules.

The FRSC said sustained collaboration between its personnel and members of the public would remain essential to achieving safer roads and further reducing preventable deaths and injuries from road crashes.
