FREE NNAMDI KANU PROTEST: POLICE WOULDN’T ATTACK US IF WE WERE BANDITS – SOWORE
Human rights activist and political campaigner, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly attacking peaceful protesters during the Free Nnamdi Kanu rally in Abuja on Monday.
Speaking on Prime Time, an Arise Television programme monitored by DAILY POST, Sowore accused the police of using excessive force against citizens who were peacefully demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
“The protest was not only on social media. It happened across Abuja,” Sowore said. “We had six different convergence points — Utako, Gudu, and Apo, which had the largest crowd. From there, we moved to the FCT Police Command, where officers tear-gassed us ruthlessly.”
He claimed that the police targeted them precisely because they were peaceful. “Police attacked us because we were peaceful protesters. If we were bandits, they would not come near us,” he declared.
Sowore emphasized that the movement remains committed to non-violence but warned that continuous repression could fuel stronger resistance in the future. “Fortunately, we have chosen a no-violence approach to resolving issues, but a generation will come that will not accept this nonsense,” he added.
The Free Nnamdi Kanu protest, organized to demand the release of the IPOB leader, has once again reignited debate over the government’s handling of peaceful demonstrations and freedom of expression in Nigeria.
