FRANCIS DURU’S BIOGRAPHY: HIS EDUCATION, WIFE, CHILDREN, FAITH AND ACTING CAREER
Francis Duru’s life story reaches beyond his familiar face on television. Alongside his work in Nollywood, he has spoken openly about his education, marriage, children and commitment to the Christian faith.
Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents, Duru comes from Eziama in Isiala Mbano, Imo State. His journey into entertainment began long before his breakthrough role as Ahanna in Rattlesnake.
His Early Life and Education
In an interview about his educational background, Duru explained that he completed his primary education and part of his secondary education in Cameroon. He later returned to Nigeria, where he finished secondary school at an institution he identified as St. Thomas Aquinas.
He went on to study Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State.
Interestingly, acting was not his original career plan. Duru said he initially wanted to study Law or Mass Communication. His interest in theatre developed after he accompanied a friend, Theophilus Nnebuchi, to a drama rehearsal.
His university years gave him opportunities to perform, develop his comic abilities and build confidence on stage. They also introduced him to the woman who would become his wife.
His Wife and Marriage
Duru married Adokiye in 2003. According to his account, they met at the Theatre Arts Department of the University of Port Harcourt when she was a first-year student and he was approaching graduation.
Their friendship grew into a relationship that continued beyond university.
Speaking about their marriage, Duru often emphasised companionship, understanding and patience. He described Adokiye as someone who understood his weaknesses while encouraging his strengths.
He also credited premarital counselling with helping them prepare for married life. The couple received counselling at Family Worship Centre in Abuja.
One memorable incident from their wedding involved his shoes. Duru recalled that his best man, fellow entertainer Basorge Tariah Jr., arrived late with them. He had to borrow another pair before his own shoes eventually arrived.
His Children and Family Life
Duru publicly identified his children as Frances, Ifeanyi and Soso. He also explained in an earlier interview that he regarded his niece, Nuella, as his own child. This helps explain why some accounts describe him as a father of three and others as a father of four.
Frances is his eldest child and daughter. Duru spoke about fatherhood as a responsibility that required time, attention and emotional involvement, even while managing a demanding entertainment career.
In August 2024, the family suffered the loss of Ifeanyi, who was 15. Duru announced his son’s death in an emotional public tribute.
He later spoke about the difficulty of grieving while supporting his family. He described taking each day gradually and drawing strength from his faith.
His Church and Christian Faith
Christianity has been an important part of Duru’s personal life. He has a longstanding association with Family Worship Centre in Abuja, where his involvement included Sunday school teaching, youth mentoring and drama ministry.
In interviews, he explained that much of his activity outside work centred on church. He also spoke about overseeing a church drama team, bringing his professional experience into a setting where he could teach and encourage others.
After losing Ifeanyi, Duru said his belief in God remained strong. He recalled participating in church service shortly after his son’s burial, describing faith as central to how he faced the loss.
His Career Beyond Acting
Although Rattlesnake remains his best-known breakthrough, Duru’s career also includes films such as Blood Money, Home in Exile, Nnenda, Stigma and Mboputa.
His work extends to directing, producing, hosting events, recording voiceovers and teaching acting masterclasses. Through these activities, he has combined screen performance with training, mentorship and community involvement.
