FOUR MIGRANTS DIE AFTER BEING TRAPPED IN TRUCK NEAR CROATIA BORDER
Four migrants have tragically lost their lives near the border between Croatia and Slovenia after reportedly being transported in overcrowded and unsafe conditions inside a truck.
According to Croatian police, the incident happened near the village of Donje Prilisce, about 70 kilometres from the capital Zagreb. The group was allegedly abandoned by a smuggler who fled the scene after dropping them near the border area.
Two other migrants were found alive but in serious condition and have since been taken to hospital for urgent medical treatment. Thirteen additional migrants were also discovered nearby and have been moved to a detention centre for processing.
Authorities said the victims were likely subjected to extremely harsh and inhumane conditions during the journey, though investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of death.
Croatia, which is part of the European Union, remains a key transit country for migrants attempting to reach Western Europe through the Balkan route. The route is widely known for dangerous crossings, harsh terrain, and criminal smuggling networks.
In recent years, similar tragedies have been recorded along the route, including deaths from boat accidents, border crossings, and exposure to extreme conditions. Migration agencies estimate that thousands continue to attempt the journey each year despite the risks.
Officials and humanitarian organisations continue to warn that tighter border controls often push migrants into more dangerous and irregular paths, increasing the likelihood of such deadly incidents.
The latest tragedy adds to growing concerns about migrant safety and human trafficking along one of Europe’s most dangerous migration corridors.
