FOUR DIE IN KANO AS VEHICLE PLUNGES INTO DAM
Four persons have been confirmed dead after a Golf Wagon vehicle plunged into Tomas Dam in Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State on Tuesday evening.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Abdullahi.
According to the statement, the accident occurred at about 7:10 p.m. when a distress call was received from a resident identified as Suleman.
Abdullahi said the vehicle, with an unknown registration number, was travelling from Kano to Roni in Jigawa State when it lost control and fell into the dam.
“Firefighters from the Danbatta Fire Station promptly responded to the scene and successfully extricated all the victims,” the statement said.
He added that 10 people were involved in the crash.
The fire service confirmed that four victims were rescued unconscious but were later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The deceased were identified as Shamsiya Miko, about 35 years old, and Fatima Danlami, about 40 years old, while two others were yet to be identified at the time of reporting.
All victims were taken to Danbatta General Hospital for medical attention and confirmation.
According to preliminary findings, the crash was caused by a burst tyre, which led the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
“The incident involved 10 persons, and our personnel responded immediately after receiving the distress call,” the statement added.
The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, urged motorists to drive with caution, especially on highways and near water bodies.
“We are appealing to drivers to always drive carefully and responsibly to avoid needless loss of lives,” he said.
He also called for urgent repair of the Tomas Dam embankment to prevent future occurrences.
“There is an urgent need for authorities concerned to repair the Tomas Dam embankment to safeguard lives and property,” he added.
