FOUR DIE, 16 SUSTAIN INJURIES AS CONTAINER TRUCK CRUSHES BUS ON LAGOS BRIDGE
At least four people have died and 16 others sustained injuries after a container truck reportedly crushed a commercial bus on a bridge in Lagos, triggering a major emergency response.
The accident has renewed concerns about road safety and the dangers posed by heavy-duty trucks transporting containers on busy roads across the state. Such crashes can have devastating consequences, particularly when overloaded or poorly controlled vehicles share narrow bridges and congested routes with commercial buses and other motorists.
Emergency responders were reportedly deployed to the scene to assist victims, evacuate the injured and manage traffic disruptions. Those injured were expected to receive medical attention, while authorities worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said preliminary findings indicated that the articulated truck was travelling uphill at excessive speed when it collided with the Toyota Hiace bus. The driver reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid the collision, causing the truck and its 20-foot container to overturn onto the passenger vehicle.
The four victims, all adult males, were confirmed dead at the scene, while the injured passengers were taken to Epe General Hospital for treatment. Emergency responders from LASEMA worked alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force to secure the area and assist victims.
A private crane was deployed to lift the overturned truck and container and facilitate the recovery of the victims. Traffic management measures were also introduced to reduce congestion and protect other road users while recovery operations continued.
The Lagos State Government expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The accident has renewed concerns about the dangers posed by speeding heavy-duty vehicles on Lagos roads, particularly along busy routes used by commercial and interstate buses.
Authorities urged motorists to observe speed limits, avoid reckless manoeuvres and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling. The incident also highlights the importance of enforcing road safety regulations to reduce preventable deaths and injuries.
