FORMER KOGI GOVERNOR IBRAHIM IDRIS DIES AT 77 IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
Former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, has died at the age of 77 in the United Kingdom. Idris, popularly known as “Ibro,” reportedly died on Sunday, September 20, 2026. News of his death prompted visits by serving and former political leaders to his Abuja residence, including Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and former governor Yahaya Bello, who joined other government officials to commiserate with members of the Idris family.
Idris was a major figure in Kogi State politics and governed the state on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. He first became governor in 2003 after defeating the then-incumbent Abubakar Audu and was re-elected in 2007. His second-term election was later nullified following a legal challenge, leading to a fresh election in March 2008, which he won. He remained in office until January 2012 and was succeeded by Captain Idris Wada.
During his time as governor, Idris’s administration was associated with several infrastructure and development projects across Kogi State. Among the projects linked to his tenure were the Greater Lokoja Water Scheme, Lokoja International Market, Confluence Stadium, specialist hospital, housing projects, road construction and investments in education infrastructure. Before entering politics, Idris had built business interests in areas including construction, furniture manufacturing, hospitality and general commerce, and established Ibro Trading Company.
Following the announcement of his death, Governor Ahmed Ododo declared a three-day mourning period across Kogi State and directed that the Nigerian and Kogi State flags be flown at half-mast at government offices and other designated public institutions. Ododo also announced that the late former governor would receive a state burial, with the state government taking responsibility for the burial expenses and arrangements. The governor described Idris’s death as a major loss to Kogi State and Nigeria and said his years in public office formed an important part of the state’s political and developmental history.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, also mourned the former governor, describing him as an important figure in the political history of the state and the PDP. She said Idris’s experience and knowledge of Kogi politics would be missed, while extending condolences to his family, political associates and the people of the state. As of the latest reports, the circumstances surrounding Idris’s death had not been disclosed, while further details about his funeral arrangements were expected from his family and the Kogi State Government.
