A former morgue manager at Harvard Medical School has been sentenced to eight years in prison for stealing and selling human remains donated for scientific research, the US Justice Department announced on Tuesday.

Cedric Lodge, 58, pleaded guilty in May to trafficking stolen body parts between 2018 and at least March 2020. The remains included internal organs, brains, skin, hands, faces and dissected heads.

Harvard said Lodge was dismissed from his position in May 2023.

According to investigators, Lodge and his wife, Denise, removed body parts from the medical school near Boston and transported them to their home in Goffstown, New Hampshire, as well as to other locations in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Authorities said the remains were taken without the consent or knowledge of Harvard, the donors or their families, and were later shipped to buyers in other states.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
