FLOOD CLAIMS TRICYCLE OPERATOR WHILE ATTEMPTING TO RESCUE WOMAN IN AWKA

A commercial tricycle operator has died after being swept away by floodwaters while attempting to rescue a woman trapped during a heavy downpour in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The incident occurred on Monday night around Miracle Junction, Ifite Road, where torrential rainfall and thunderstorms caused severe flooding and damaged properties in the area.

The tricycle operator, who was said to be in his 40s, reportedly rushed towards the woman after she became trapped by the rapidly flowing water. However, he slipped while trying to reach her and was carried away by the powerful current alongside the woman. Residents in the area reportedly heard both victims crying for help as the floodwaters swept them away, but efforts to intervene were unsuccessful.

The lifeless body of the unidentified tricycle operator was recovered on Tuesday morning from a flood channel near Book Foundation, close to Miracle Junction. However, the woman he was attempting to rescue had not been found as of the time of the report, leaving residents uncertain about her whereabouts and raising concerns that she may also have been carried further away by the flood.

An eyewitness, identified simply as Kelvin, said residents had watched helplessly from their homes as the situation unfolded. He also disclosed that the heavy storm damaged several properties in the neighbourhood, including fences and rooftops, while a fence was reportedly pulled down onto an SUV parked inside a compound. Government officials visited the area on Tuesday to assess the extent of the damage and identify other potential hazards.

The incident has renewed concerns over the dangers posed by flooding during periods of intense rainfall, particularly in areas with inadequate drainage and fast-moving flood channels. Residents are expected to remain cautious during heavy downpours and avoid attempting to cross or enter rapidly flowing floodwaters, as even rescue efforts can quickly become life-threatening.
