FIRST THINGS TO DO TO STAY ON TOP OF YOUR GAME DURING NYSC CAMP (FOR NIGERIAN CORPS MEMBERS)
The NYSC (National Youth Service Corps) orientation camp can be intense, exciting, and even overwhelming. But with the right mindset and preparation, you can not only survive but thrive during those 3 weeks.
Here are the first key things to do to stay on top of your game from Day 1:
1. Arrive Early & Organize Your Documents
Get to camp as early as possible to avoid long queues and stress.
Have photocopies of all essential documents: call-up letter (original + copies), green card, school ID, statement of result, passport photos, medical certificate, etc.
Bring multiple clear bags or folders to keep your documents safe and organized.
2. Secure Your Accommodation Spot Smartly
The early bird gets the better bed. Find a bunk near a fan (if available), and away from toilets or entryways for some privacy and less disturbance.
Bring a padlock and bucket, along with your bedding (foam, bedsheet, pillow, etc.).
3. Dress Right from Day One
Be in white-on-white (top, shorts, socks, sneakers) on arrival to blend in and avoid unnecessary attention from soldiers.
Keep your full NYSC kit safe when given – don’t misplace it.
Have extra plain white T-shirts and shorts, because you’ll sweat through them daily.
4. Take Care of Your Health
Register at the camp clinic if you have any pre-existing health condition.
Bring personal drugs, a first aid kit, mosquito net, hand sanitizer, and drink lots of water.
Avoid experimenting with unfamiliar food — eat what your stomach can handle.
5. Be Security Conscious
Watch your belongings closely. Don’t leave your phone or wallet unattended.
Don’t carry large amounts of cash. Use mobile banking or store money safely.
6. Build Connections Early
Be friendly. Get to know your bunkmates, platoon members, and camp officials.
Participate in platoon activities – sports, talent shows, and competitions can help you stand out.
These relationships might help during redeployment or in your Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).
7. Join a CDS Group That Fits Your Passion
When the chance comes, choose a Community Development Service (CDS) group based on your strength (e.g. Press, Red Cross, OBS, Legal Aid, etc.).
It’ll give you a stronger voice on camp and even after.
8. Follow the Rules, But Stay Smart
Be punctual for parade and activities — soldiers take timing seriously.
However, don’t stress over everything. Rest when you can, and don’t try to do everything.
Learn to prioritize your well-being.
9. Get Informed About Redeployment Early (If Needed)
If you plan to redeploy (based on health, marital, or security reasons), gather the necessary documents fast.
Watch out for official announcements on redeployment procedures.
10. Stay Positive and Open-Minded
Camp life can be stressful — from early wake-up calls to noisy bunkmates and drill routines.
Keep your mindset right. See it as an opportunity to grow, meet people, and challenge yourself.
