FIRES RAVAGE OYO HEALTH CENTRE AND PLASTIC FACTORY, MILLIONS LOST IN PROPERTIES
Oyo State witnessed two separate fire incidents over the weekend that destroyed properties worth millions of naira but claimed no lives.
The first outbreak occurred on Saturday evening at a primary healthcare centre in Masifa, Idi Araba, Ogbomoso. According to eyewitnesses, the fire started in the solar panel room of the centre.
Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement. He explained that the agency received a distress call at exactly 8:55 pm. Firefighters swiftly contained the flames, preventing them from spreading to other parts of the facility.
“No casualty was recorded and properties worth millions of naira were saved,” Akinwande said, attributing the possible cause to overheated solar batteries ignited by plugged electrical gadgets.
Barely 24 hours later, another fire broke out at a plastic factory located near the General Hospital in Saki. The incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, reportedly damaged the factory’s solar power system and several stored plastic materials.
Akinwande confirmed that the Saki Fire Station received a distress call at about 12:50 pm and firefighters were able to quickly put the situation under control.
“The fire slightly affected the solar system and nearby plastics, but properties worth billions of naira were saved. The cause was traced to an electrical fault in the solar power system,” he explained.
Authorities have urged residents and business owners to be cautious with solar and electrical installations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
