FIRE RAZES LAGOS RESIDENCE, KILLS 103-YEAR-OLD WOMAN
A fire broke out at a residential building on Bola Street in the Oyingbo area of Lagos State, claiming the life of a 103-year-old woman and destroying several properties.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement released by its Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu. The agency reportedly received a distress call around noon on Friday.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene at 12:13 p.m., finding that a bungalow with two attached shops was fully engulfed in flames.
“Upon the arrival of the LRT at 12:13 hours, it was observed that a residential bungalow with two shops attached was engulfed by fire,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
According to him, the fire reportedly began in one room before spreading rapidly throughout the building. The cause of the outbreak has not yet been determined.
“Rescue operations were immediately activated, but unfortunately, a 103-year-old woman trapped inside the building did not survive,” he added.
The fire affected eight rooms, a mini flat, six shops, and numerous household items. The remains of the deceased have been handed over to her family, while firefighters, in collaboration with other emergency responders, successfully extinguished the blaze.
Oke-Osanyintolu stated that rescue, recovery, and dampening-down operations have concluded, and authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage.
