FIRE GUTS IGBUDU MARKET IN WARRI, TRADERS COUNT HEAVY LOSSES
Tragedy struck early Tuesday morning as a fire swept through the popular Igbudu Market in Warri, Delta State, destroying countless shops and goods worth millions of naira.
The exact cause of the fire remains unclear at this time. However, many suspect it might have been triggered by an electrical surge when power was restored by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).
Eyewitnesses described heartbreaking scenes as shop owners arrived to find their livelihoods reduced to ashes. Some traders broke down in tears, helplessly watching what remained of their stalls and goods smoulder under the debris.
Speaking on the incident, the Etsu-Nupe of Warri, HRH Alhaji Zubairu Mohammed Tajudeen, who also has strong ties with the market community, expressed his shock. “I just woke up now and saw that fire has finished Igbudu Market,” he lamented in local Pidgin English, adding, “But na electric go fit cause am when BEDC restore light.”
Local residents have called for a thorough investigation to determine the real cause of the fire and to prevent such devastating incidents in the future. Many traders are also appealing to the Delta State government and well-meaning Nigerians for support to help them get back on their feet.
As the dust settles, the bustling market that once buzzed with activity now stands silent—a stark reminder of how quickly fortunes can change.
