FILMMAKERS SHOULD BALANCE FUN AND FEELINGS — EFE IRELE ADVISES NOLLYWOOD
Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Efe Irele, has called on Nigerian movie producers to strike a balance between commercial appeal and emotional depth in their storytelling.
In a recent interview, Irele praised the remarkable progress made by filmmakers across the country but emphasized that financial sustainability remains vital to the industry’s long-term growth.
“I must commend many filmmakers for constantly raising the bar. We definitely need more emotionally driven stories, but we also can’t overlook those focusing on commercial success. At the end of the day, the industry must generate income to keep thriving,” she said.
She explained that the rise of streaming platforms has influenced how audiences engage with films, compelling filmmakers to adapt their creative approach.
According to Irele, filmmakers must now create content that truly draws people out of their homes to the cinemas.
“Not everyone wants to go to the cinemas anymore, especially now that streaming dominates. We have to produce movies that make people laugh, relax, and have a good time — that’s what many viewers seek,” she noted.
Nonetheless, Irele urged filmmakers not to neglect storytelling that stirs deep emotions and provokes reflection, as such narratives are essential in preserving the true essence of filmmaking.
