FG VOWS TO COMMERCIALISE FUNAAB-ALPHA, BOOST LIVESTOCK GENETICS
The Federal Government has pledged to commercialise FUNAAB-Alpha and strengthen livestock genetics as part of efforts to improve animal production and support the growth of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
The initiative highlights the importance of applying research and scientific innovation to livestock farming, particularly as the country seeks to improve productivity, strengthen food security and reduce dependence on imported animal products.
Livestock genetics plays an important role in improving the quality and performance of farm animals. Through appropriate breeding programmes, farmers can develop livestock with desirable characteristics, including better growth rates, improved milk or meat production and greater resilience to certain environmental conditions.
Commercialising research-based livestock innovations could help bridge the gap between universities, research institutions and farmers. Rather than remaining largely within academic settings, successful innovations can be developed into practical products and services that livestock producers can access.
For Nigerian farmers, improved livestock breeds and better breeding support could create opportunities to increase production and improve farm incomes. Stronger livestock value chains could also benefit feed producers, veterinary service providers, processors, distributors and other businesses.
However, the success of commercialisation will depend on the specific technology involved, its affordability and its suitability for local farming conditions. Farmers will also need access to training, veterinary services, reliable breeding stock and appropriate infrastructure to achieve the best results.
The initiative could further encourage collaboration between government agencies, universities, private investors and agricultural businesses. Such partnerships can help provide the funding, technical expertise and distribution networks needed to take research innovations to market.
Nigeria’s livestock sector has significant economic potential, but improving productivity requires sustained investment in research, animal health, breeding and modern farming practices.
The Federal Government’s commitment to commercialising FUNAAB-Alpha therefore signals an effort to turn scientific knowledge into practical agricultural benefits. Its wider impact will depend on how effectively the innovation reaches farmers and contributes to more productive, sustainable livestock farming.
