FG UNVEILS REFORMS TO END FISH IMPORTATION, BOOST LOCAL PRODUCTION
The Federal Government has announced plans to eliminate Nigeria’s dependence on imported fish by enhancing local production through strategic reforms in the aquaculture and fisheries sector.
Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, revealed this during a meeting with fisheries cooperative groups in Abuja. The announcement was contained in a statement issued by Dr. Bolaji Akinola, the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications.
Oyetola emphasized that the government is committed to repositioning the fisheries sector as a key contributor to food security, employment generation, and export growth.
“Nigeria must transition towards self-sufficiency in fish production,” the Minister stated, highlighting the government’s support for the sector through policy development, technical assistance, and financial inclusion initiatives.
He added, “We aim to increase domestic fish production, reduce reliance on imports, and promote sustainable growth within the industry.”
The meeting brought together key stakeholders such as the Fisheries Cooperative Federation of Nigeria (FCFN), Tilapia Aquaculture Developers Association of Nigeria (TADAN), Catfish Farmers Association of Nigeria (CAFAN), Women in Fish Farming and Aquaculture, and the Practicing Farmers Association of Nigeria.
Oyetola also announced plans to empower women and youth through start-up grants and other support programs, underscoring the importance of their participation in the sector’s growth.
“Engaging youth in aquaculture is not only essential for food production but also a strategic way to tackle unemployment,” he said. “We are determined to ensure inclusive opportunities for both young people and women in this transformation journey.”
In his welcome remarks, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olufemi Oloruntola, noted that the gathering was a follow-up to promises made during the Ministry’s second-quarter citizens and stakeholders engagement held in Lagos on July 3.
He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to building strong partnerships with cooperative societies to drive inclusive and sustainable sectoral development.
