FG UNVEILS NEW HIV STRATEGY TO REDUCE DONOR DEPENDENCE
The Federal Government has unveiled a new strategy aimed at reducing Nigeria’s dependence on foreign donors for HIV prevention, treatment, and care programmes.
The initiative seeks to strengthen domestic funding and ensure the long-term sustainability of the country’s HIV response as global donor support becomes increasingly uncertain.
According to health officials, the strategy focuses on expanding local financing mechanisms, improving resource management, and increasing government investment in HIV services across the country.
The move comes amid growing concerns that heavy reliance on international funding could pose risks to treatment programmes and healthcare delivery if donor contributions decline.
Officials explained that the new approach will encourage stronger collaboration between government agencies, the private sector, development partners, and civil society organisations to secure sustainable funding sources.
The strategy also aims to improve access to testing, treatment, prevention services, and public awareness campaigns while maintaining progress made in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Health experts have welcomed the initiative, noting that greater domestic ownership of HIV programmes is essential for long-term success and resilience within Nigeria’s healthcare system.
They, however, stressed the importance of consistent implementation, adequate budgetary allocation, and transparency in the management of funds.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to ending HIV as a public health threat and ensuring that millions of Nigerians living with the virus continue to receive quality care and support.
As the country works toward greater self-reliance in healthcare financing, the new strategy is expected to play a key role in shaping the future of Nigeria’s HIV response.
