The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to regulate TikTok and similar social media platforms to promote more purposeful use among young people.

The disclosure was made by Kashifu Inuwa Abdullah, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), who said the regulation aims to redirect youth creativity toward productive and innovative digital ventures rather than “purely entertainment-driven content.”

According to Abdullah, TikTok and other fast-growing digital platforms have immense potential beyond leisure, and the government intends to ensure they are used to “create value, build digital skills, and support national development.”

However, the announcement has stirred mixed reactions online. While some Nigerians agree that social media can be a tool for education and empowerment, others criticized the move as unnecessary government interference.

Many commentators argued that the government should prioritize addressing pressing issues like unemployment, inflation, and internet access instead of focusing on restricting entertainment platforms.

Despite the controversy, NITDA maintains that the proposed regulation is not to stifle creativity but to ensure that social media contributes meaningfully to Nigeria’s digital economy goals.

As discussions continue, all eyes are on how the government intends to balance regulation and digital freedom in a country where social media has become both a platform for expression and livelihood.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
