FG TIGHTENS APPROVAL RULES FOR OFFICIALS’ FOREIGN TRIPS

The Federal Government has directed ministers, heads of ministries, departments and agencies, and other government appointees to obtain prior approval from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation before embarking on official foreign trips.

The directive was contained in a circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, amid increased scrutiny of individuals and organisations claiming to represent the Federal Government.

Under the new directive, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must require evidence of valid OSGF approval when processing official, diplomatic or service visas and other travel documents for government appointees.

The government said the measure was necessary to strengthen accountability, fiscal discipline and coordination of official foreign engagements.

The Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation was also directed to verify evidence of approval during audits of foreign trips funded with public money.

Accounting officers and heads of government institutions were warned against processing expenses for official foreign travel without the required clearance.

The government said the requirement would help prevent unauthorised trips and ensure that officials travelling abroad on behalf of Nigeria have the necessary approval.

The directive comes amid investigations into purported government agencies, including the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, whose activities have raised concerns about impersonation and the use of questionable government documents.
