FG TARGETS ABANDONED MINE PITS FOR ENERGY, TOURISM

The Federal Government is exploring ways to convert abandoned mining pits across Nigeria into productive assets for energy generation and tourism.

The initiative is aimed at addressing the environmental and economic challenges associated with abandoned mine sites while creating new opportunities for local communities.

Government officials said some of the abandoned pits could be repurposed for renewable energy projects, recreational activities, tourism facilities, and other productive uses.

The move is also expected to support efforts to restore degraded mining areas and reduce the environmental risks associated with abandoned sites.

Mining stakeholders said converting old mine pits into productive assets could provide additional economic value while improving the appearance and safety of affected communities.

Experts noted that some sites could potentially support solar energy projects, artificial lakes, recreational parks, and other tourism-related developments, depending on their location and physical characteristics.

They, however, stressed the need for proper environmental assessments and safety measures before any abandoned mine site is repurposed.

Stakeholders also called for collaboration between government agencies, mining operators, investors, and local communities to ensure that the projects are commercially viable and beneficial to host communities.

The initiative could create jobs and generate new sources of revenue while supporting environmental rehabilitation across mining areas.

The government said it would continue to identify suitable abandoned mine sites and assess their potential for alternative economic uses.

Stakeholders said effective implementation could turn abandoned mining sites from environmental liabilities into productive assets that support Nigeria’s energy, tourism, and economic development goals.
