The Federal Government has backed a 100-day tourism calendar designed to increase economic activity and unlock an estimated ₦100 billion in value from Nigeria’s tourism and creative economy. The initiative is expected to bring together major cultural, entertainment and tourism events across the country while creating more opportunities for businesses operating within the sector.

The programme is aimed at turning Nigeria’s numerous festivals, cultural celebrations and entertainment activities into a more organised tourism ecosystem. By coordinating events and promoting them to both local and international audiences, the government hopes to attract more visitors, increase spending on accommodation, transportation, food and entertainment, and create additional income for people working across the tourism value chain.

Government officials said the calendar would also help improve planning within the industry by giving tourists, investors and event organisers clearer information about major activities taking place across different parts of the country. The initiative is expected to encourage stronger collaboration between the Federal Government, state governments, private-sector operators, hospitality businesses and communities that host cultural and tourism events.

The tourism sector has significant potential to contribute to employment and economic diversification, particularly as Nigeria seeks to reduce its dependence on oil revenues. Increased tourist activity could benefit hotels, airlines, restaurants, transport operators, tour companies, artisans and other small businesses, while cultural attractions and local festivals could provide additional opportunities for communities to earn revenue.

The Federal Government is therefore positioning the 100-day calendar as part of a broader strategy to make tourism a stronger contributor to the national economy. If effectively implemented, the programme could help attract visitors, increase domestic tourism and unlock new investments, with the government targeting about ₦100 billion in economic value from the initiative.
