FG PUSHES LAGOS-DAKAR MINERALS CORRIDOR TO BOOST AFRICA’S MINING POTENTIAL

The Federal Government has called for the development of a Lagos-Dakar minerals corridor as part of efforts to unlock Africa’s mineral wealth and strengthen regional trade in critical resources.

Government officials said the proposed corridor would improve connectivity between mineral-rich areas, support the movement of resources, and encourage greater investment in the mining sector across West Africa. The initiative is expected to promote value addition by creating opportunities for local processing rather than relying mainly on raw mineral exports.

Stakeholders noted that Africa holds significant deposits of critical minerals needed for industries such as renewable energy, technology, and manufacturing. However, they stressed that infrastructure gaps, limited processing capacity, and weak regional integration have slowed the continent’s ability to fully benefit from these resources.

The Federal Government said stronger collaboration among African countries, improved transport networks, and investor-friendly policies will be essential to making the corridor successful.

Experts believe the proposed Lagos-Dakar route could help position West Africa as a stronger player in the global minerals supply chain while creating jobs and supporting long-term economic growth.
