FG PLANS 360KM/H RAIL FROM LAGOS TO MAIDUGURI

The Federal Government has announced plans to develop a high-speed rail system connecting Lekki in Lagos to Maiduguri, Borno State.

The proposed railway is expected to support faster movement across the country, with trains projected to travel at speeds of about 360 kilometres per hour.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Funsho Adebiyi, disclosed the plan in Abuja during the 19th National Council on Transportation.

According to Adebiyi, the project is part of the government’s broader plan to improve Nigeria’s transport infrastructure and encourage more people to choose rail for long-distance journeys.

He explained that the high-speed system could significantly reduce travel time between major cities. He cited the possibility of passengers travelling between Abuja and Lagos in about three hours.

The proposed line may also be constructed on elevated structures rather than entirely at ground level, according to the permanent secretary.

Adebiyi said the government was also working to improve the connection between different modes of transportation, including road, rail and water transport.

The Federal Executive Council has approved the development of a Smart National Transport Data Bank to support better planning and coordination within the sector.

The database is expected to provide information on vehicles, drivers, road users and transport workers across the country.

The government also plans to establish six standardised bus terminals as part of efforts to improve inter-state transportation. The facilities are expected to include waiting areas, police booths, workshops, restaurants and restrooms.

Adebiyi said the Federal Government would continue expanding the rail network as it works towards a more integrated transportation system across Nigeria.
