FG: NO IMMEDIATE PLAN TO ENFORCE 5% FUEL TAX

The Federal Government has clarified that it has no immediate plan to begin enforcing the recently introduced 5% Petroleum Products Tax.

The assurance was given by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.

His comments come amid widespread public outrage over the proposed levy, which many Nigerians fear would further increase the cost of fuel and worsen the already tough economic situation.

Organised labour had earlier threatened to embark on industrial action if the government failed to suspend the tax, describing it as an unnecessary burden on citizens.

Speaking on the issue, Edun urged Nigerians to remain calm, noting that while the levy is part of the new tax legislation, there is no plan to implement it in the immediate future.

This statement is expected to ease tensions as discussions between the government and labour unions continue over measures to cushion the impact of economic reforms on Nigerians.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
