FG MOVES TO SETTLE OUTSTANDING BENEFITS OWED FORMER NIGERIA AIRWAYS WORKERS

The Federal Government has commenced moves to settle outstanding benefits owed former employees of the defunct Nigeria Airways, providing relief for workers who have waited for years for payments arising from the liquidation of the national carrier.

The development is expected to address long-standing financial obligations to former staff of the airline, which stopped operations in 2003 after years of financial difficulties. Nigeria Airways was subsequently liquidated, leaving a number of former employees with unresolved claims relating to their entitlements. 

The payment process is part of the government’s efforts to resolve inherited liabilities involving former public-sector workers and ensure that legitimate claims are addressed. The development is particularly significant for former Nigeria Airways employees who have continued to push for the settlement of their outstanding benefits following the collapse of the airline.

Nigeria Airways, which was established in 1958 and became Nigeria’s national carrier, operated domestic and international routes before its eventual closure. At the time of its liquidation, the airline had faced serious financial challenges, including accumulated debts and declining operations. 

The settlement of the outstanding benefits is expected to bring some relief to former workers and their families, while also marking another step towards resolving liabilities left behind by the defunct airline. Former employees have over the years called on successive administrations to fulfil the government’s obligations to them.
