The Federal Government has launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System and urged Nigerians to identify and begin using their new digital postcodes.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the launch on Thursday, describing the system as an important step towards improving how locations are identified across Nigeria.

The system, operated by the Nigerian Postal Service, assigns a unique 11-character digital postcode to every addressable building in the country. The codes are designed to provide precise, Geographic Information System-enabled references for locations.

Tijani said the system could improve access to services by helping businesses reach customers, enabling families to provide accurate locations during emergencies and supporting government agencies in delivering essential services.

The minister encouraged Nigerians to search for their postcodes through the official digital postcode platform and share them with family members, businesses and service providers.

The system identifies locations through five levels: state, local government area, district, area and building.

The government said the initiative is also expected to support sectors including e-commerce, deliveries, emergency response and public service delivery.

Tijani linked the initiative to efforts to build digital infrastructure capable of supporting broader economic participation and the government’s ambition of growing Nigeria’s economy.
