The Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have agreed to work together on a pilot programme aimed at improving electricity supply and moving towards 24-hour power in Lagos.

The 24/7 Energy Zones initiative, approved by President Bola Tinubu, will begin in Lagos before extending to the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt corridors.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the ministry had secured commitments from electricity distribution companies to take more power and provide reliable electricity to customers along the Lagos corridor.

The initiative will focus on four priority areas: grid stabilisation, market liquidity, grid expansion, and governance and regulatory harmonisation.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the state was ready to work with the Federal Government to address challenges affecting the electricity market.

The two sides agreed to establish a joint technical committee to resolve outstanding technical and operational issues and recommend steps for implementation.

The committee will report to a steering committee headed by Sanwo-Olu and co-chaired by Tegbe.

The Federal Government said the broader energy-zone programme is intended to improve electricity delivery to homes, businesses and industries in major demand centres by addressing distribution and other infrastructure constraints.
