FG HANDS OVER ENUGU AIRPORT TO AERO ALLIANCE UNDER 30-YEAR PPP DEAL

The Federal Government has formally handed over the Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA), Enugu, to Aero Alliance Limited under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) concession, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure reform.

The handover, completed on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at the airport’s new terminal, transfers responsibility for financing, rehabilitation, expansion, operation, and management of the facility to the concessionaire for an initial 30-year period. Ownership remains with the Federal Government.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who presided over the ceremony, described the deal as a historic milestone after more than two decades of failed concession attempts. He highlighted its potential to elevate the airport to international standards of safety, efficiency, and passenger experience.

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who attended the event, was commended for his administration’s supportive role. The concession is expected to boost economic activities, enhance connectivity in the South-East region, attract investments, create jobs, and improve tourism and trade.

The agreement, signed earlier in January 2026, aligns with the Tinubu administration’s strategy to leverage private sector capital for critical infrastructure development. Aero Alliance Limited will now focus on modernising facilities, expanding capacity, and ensuring sustainable operations amid growing domestic and regional air travel demand.

This development is seen as a major win for public-private collaboration in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
