The Federal Government has congratulated Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, following the record-breaking performance of her latest movie, Behind the Scenes, at the Nigerian box office.

The commendation was conveyed in a statement shared on Monday via the official X handle of the National Orientation Agency, which described Akindele’s achievement as a major milestone for Nigeria’s creative industry and a strong indicator of the growing global acceptance of Nigerian stories.

According to the agency, Behind the Scenes has officially crossed ₦2.1 billion at the Nigerian box office, making history as the first Nollywood film to surpass the ₦2 billion mark.

“The flex did not stop at home; the movie also showed modest global muscle, raking in over $111,256 in Canada and an impressive $190,249 across North America,” the statement read.

“From Lagos to Toronto, from cinemas in Abuja to theatres overseas, this movie had everyone locked in.”

The NOA noted that the box office success further underlined Akindele’s remarkable feat as the first filmmaker to top the African box office rankings for three consecutive years.

It said the achievement reflects the expanding reach of Nigeria’s film industry and reinforces the global appeal of Nollywood productions, describing the moment as a source of national pride for Nigeria’s cultural and creative sectors.

The Federal Government’s endorsement comes amid widespread praise for the 2025 release, which has dominated the local cinema space while also strengthening Nollywood’s international footprint.

The agency added that Akindele’s success exemplifies the potential of Nigeria’s creative economy and the power of locally produced content to compete on the global stage.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
