FG CALLS FOR AU ACTION OVER ATTACKS ON NIGERIANS IN SOUTH AFRICA

The Federal Government has called on the African Union to take action over recent attacks targeting Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa.

The government expressed concern over reports of violence and intimidation involving Nigerians living and doing business in the country, urging the AU to intervene and help prevent further incidents.

Officials said the attacks were unacceptable and stressed the need to protect the rights and safety of Nigerians residing in South Africa.

The Federal Government also called for stronger cooperation between Nigeria, South Africa and relevant regional bodies to address issues that could fuel tensions between communities.

The development comes amid recurring concerns over attacks against foreign nationals in South Africa, including Nigerians, with previous incidents leading to diplomatic discussions between both countries.

The government said the safety of Nigerians abroad remains a priority and that it would continue to engage the South African authorities through diplomatic channels.

It also urged Nigerians living in South Africa to remain vigilant and report incidents of violence or harassment to the appropriate authorities.

The Federal Government maintained that African countries must work together to promote peaceful relations and protect citizens across borders.

It further called on the African Union to strengthen mechanisms for addressing xenophobic attacks and other forms of violence against migrants on the continent.
