The Federal Government has begun construction of a new National Control Centre for the Nigerian Independent System Operator in Osogbo, Osun State, as part of efforts to strengthen the management and reliability of the national electricity grid.

The new facility is being built to replace the existing 64-year-old control centre, which the government says no longer meets the requirements of managing Nigeria’s expanding electricity system.

The centre is expected to improve the monitoring, control and security of the national grid while enabling operators to respond more efficiently to faults and disruptions.

Vice President Kashim Shettima performed the groundbreaking ceremony, with the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, also participating in the event.

The project is part of efforts to modernise Nigeria’s power infrastructure and strengthen the systems used to manage electricity transmission across the country.

The government said the upgraded facility would provide modern technology for monitoring electricity flows and managing the national grid.

The project is expected to support improved coordination between power generation, transmission and distribution operators.

Officials said strengthening the control system was important as Nigeria works to improve electricity supply and reduce disruptions affecting consumers.

The new centre is therefore expected to play a key role in improving grid stability and supporting the country’s long-term electricity development plans.
