FG APPROVES EAST, WEST SUPER GRIDS TO RAISE TRANSMISSION CAPACITY TO 19,000MW
The Federal Government has approved plans to develop eastern and western super grids aimed at increasing Nigeria’s electricity transmission capacity to 19,000 megawatts, in a move to strengthen the national power network and improve electricity supply.
The proposed projects are expected to expand the capacity of the transmission system to evacuate electricity from generation plants and deliver it more efficiently to distribution companies and consumers across the country.
Nigeria’s electricity sector has long faced challenges involving inadequate transmission infrastructure, frequent grid disturbances and limitations in moving available power to consumers. The proposed super grids are intended to address some of these constraints by strengthening major transmission corridors.
The initiative comes amid efforts by the government to improve electricity generation, transmission and distribution under ongoing power sector reforms.
Increasing transmission capacity is considered critical to improving the reliability of electricity supply, as additional generation alone cannot guarantee more power for consumers if the transmission network lacks the capacity to carry it.
The eastern and western super grids are expected to support the movement of electricity across regions, reduce congestion on existing transmission lines and improve the stability of the national grid.
Improved transmission infrastructure could also create opportunities for industrial expansion by helping manufacturers and other businesses access more reliable electricity. Persistent power shortages have forced many companies to depend on costly alternative energy sources, increasing production expenses.
However, the success of the projects will depend on timely funding, effective implementation, equipment availability and coordination among agencies and operators across the electricity value chain.
The government is also expected to work with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the new infrastructure complements ongoing investments in generation and distribution.
If successfully implemented, the super grids could strengthen Nigeria’s ability to transmit more electricity and support efforts to improve power supply to households, businesses and industries.
