The Federal Government has announced plans for a low-key celebration of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2026, with President Bola Tinubu expected to address the nation as part of the activities. The decision was disclosed as the government inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee to coordinate events marking the anniversary, with the programme expected to focus on reflection and recognition of the country’s journey since independence.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who inaugurated the committee, said the anniversary would provide an opportunity to honour the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s founding fathers and reflect on the country’s progress. He said the celebration should also encourage Nigerians to appreciate the contributions of citizens who had worked to build and sustain the nation over the years.

The committee is expected to coordinate a series of activities leading up to October 1, including a public lecture and other programmes designed to mark the anniversary without the elaborate festivities associated with previous celebrations. The government’s decision to keep the programme low-key comes amid its emphasis on responsible management of public resources while still ensuring that the significance of the national anniversary is recognised.

President Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a nationwide broadcast on October 1 as part of the anniversary programme. His address is expected to focus on the state of the nation and Nigeria’s progress since independence, while highlighting the government’s direction and priorities. The anniversary will mark 66 years since Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960.

The Federal Government said the anniversary should serve as a moment for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s achievements, challenges and future aspirations. The inter-ministerial committee will oversee the coordination of the approved activities and ensure that the programme reflects the significance of the occasion while maintaining the government’s decision for a modest celebration.
