The Nigerian government has confirmed that the national grid has been fully restored just hours after it collapsed on Tuesday, marking the second such disruption since last Friday.

According to the Nigeria Independent System Operator (NISO), nationwide electricity restoration began around 11:00 a.m., following the collapse at approximately 10:48 a.m.

NISO explained that the disturbance originated from the Gombe Transmission Substation. Restoration efforts commenced at 11:11 a.m. and have since been successfully completed.

“The national grid experienced a voltage disturbance originating from the Gombe Transmission Substation,” NISO stated.

“The disturbance quickly spread across the network, affecting Jebba, Kainji, and subsequently Ayede Transmission Substations. Some transmission lines and generating units tripped, resulting in a partial system collapse.

“Immediate corrective actions were implemented to stabilise the system and restore normal operations. Restoration, which began at 11:11 a.m., has now been completed. The incident only affected part of the grid; it was not a total collapse as previously reported.”

NISO added that electricity supply across the affected areas has returned to normal following the full restoration of the national grid.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
