FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ARRESTS TWO, SHUTS DOWN ILLEGAL MINING SITE IN OSUN STATE

The Federal Government has arrested two individuals and sealed off an illegal mining site in Osun State as part of intensified efforts to curb unregulated mining activities across the country.

The operation, conducted by a joint security team, targeted unauthorised mineral extraction that posed environmental and safety risks to local communities. Officials said the arrested suspects will be prosecuted in accordance with relevant mining and environmental laws.

The government reiterated its commitment to enforcing regulations in the solid minerals sector to promote responsible mining practices, protect the environment, and generate legitimate revenue for national development.

Stakeholders welcomed the action, noting that illegal mining often leads to land degradation, water pollution, and loss of lives. They called for sustained monitoring and community sensitisation to discourage such activities.

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development assured that similar operations would continue in other states where illegal mining is prevalent. The government also encouraged genuine investors to operate within the legal framework to benefit from the country’s abundant mineral resources.
